reflection of the course
I think the assignment I feel most helpful is goal-setting assignment.
People always feel exited and confident when they are setting the goals. However, that doesn't mean they are able to accomplish their goals at the end. At the beginning of the semester, I set three goals: get all A's for all the courses this semester, maintain a healthy lifestyle, and speak English as much as I can. Now, it comes the middle of the semester and the end of this sociology course. The goal that that I am most likely to achieve is "get all A's". Currently, I maintain over 90 percent for my sociology, business, Math, and economic courses. As for the "maintain a healthy lifestyle", I have done a much worse job. I told myself that I should stop eating junk food even with Chick-Fila opening right near campus, I still eat Chick-Fila very often for its convenience and limited food choices around campus. I also told myself that I should quit the habit of staying up too late, but the truth is that I still stay up quite often this semester because I keep procrastinating until the midnight. I did a fairly good job at the beginning of the semester. I usually started the modules of this course at Wednesday not like later that I began the writing assignment at Sunday night. The result of this was I couldn't finish it until midnight then I had to stay up. Besides, I also points deducted for late submission. The same thing also happened to my English class, I always started the essay at midnight and I always went to the class unprepared because I haven't finish the reading. This also made my third goal uncompleted because I didn't have much clue about what the professor is talking about in the class, let alone participating.
I think this assignment is meaningful because it shows one's idealistic condition. Although I failed most of the goals so far, luckily I have a chance to reflect on the goals at the middle of the semester. What I am going to do in this last half of the semester: catch up reading, sleep before 12 everyday and go to fitness center more often.
I also think the collaboration assignment is meaningful. I actually finished this assignment at the last minute. I didn't find a correct way to invite people so the people I invited into the group work was already in another group. I was informed by one of my partner at Sunday evening. I still thanked him for telling me this. Then I felt despair that I would definitely pass the due time. However, just at 11 PM, I received a email from another classmate. He asked whether I was interested in doing question#4. I really felt like being saved and said yes to that. I feel I am really lucky to have a new group at the last hour before and successfully finish it. One thing I learned from this assignment is that it is very important to start correctly. A good beginning is half success. I need to figure out the rule and the order before I start a project.
As for this course, I think there could be more debate discussion since most of the issue we talk about is social issue and not have a absolute standard of right and wrong but based on one's value system. Having more debate discussion could make the students apply what they learn to the real life and be motivated to participate in this course and exchange ideas from others.
