Video Analysis: "First Kiss" by Tatia Plieve
Reflection: People make sense of each other's social word by meaningful symbols. I think people make better of each other's social world by symbols that carries kindness. If everyone shows love to the other person, the whole society would be full of love

The video I try to analyses is called " First kiss". The director asked twenty people who didn't know each other to kiss their partner at the first time they met each other. The two people who were put together may have different culture background, races, appearances, figures, or ages, Some of them are also same sex. They all feel embarrassed or nervous at the very first beginning. One thing they share in common is that they are all nice to each other. They talked, laughed, and looked deep into the other's eyes. Then there comes the magic moment, they kissed each other. No more awkwardness, no more shyness, they kissed like they really loved their partner. As a audience, I could see the passion they put into the kiss and it makes me feel relaxed.
Karl Marx analyzes this society through conflict theory, which means that he would focuses on the differences and inequalities among the people. He sees a society with limited resources that people have to compete for. Conflict theorist like Karl Marx would be interested in the unequal events that happened due to race, gender or religion. However, in the video, there are no inequalities or conflicts. The atmosphere is harmonious. Although people in the video come from different culture background or have different colors of skin. Some pairs are a man with a woman, but some pairs are same sexed. Discrimination doesn't happen in the video. I think Karl Marx would view this video as a idealistic condition of the society. All the members in society are kind and easy-going person. Exploitation never happens in the society because all people are caring for the welfare of others and want to make others happy.
Emile Durkheim is interested in studying how social forces influences on individual behaviors. He represents the theory of social integration. I would consider him as representative of functionalist perspective to see the society. I also think this video is a great example of integration. Functionalist perspective focuses on how inter-related work together for the whole purpose of the society. In the video, these twenty people kiss each other for completing the work for photographer. Durkheim would view this willingness to corporate as a good thing. In reality, if every member of the society could act for the well-being of others not only for the welfare or selfish needs of themselves. There would be no dysfunctions in this society, even bad people would be moved by acts of kindness and love. Dysfunctions will not happen when this society is in balance and equilibrium.
The paradigm that is most represented in the video would be the interaction perspective. Auguste Comte is the founder of this society and I think he would love this video. The interaction perspective uses a micro-level view to analyze the society, which focuses on the individual. They communicate with each other using language or symbol. Kiss is the symbol in their situation. It shows love, kindness, and passion. They make sense of each other's social words by talking, observing, and kissing. It shows a temptation that they want to know each other, and they feel good to be kissed by their partner. This video is spreading a positive social attitude: when you are nice to others, other will also be nice to you. If the society all consists of people who are willing to show their simple act of kindness and love, this society would be perfect.
